In northern Iraq, years of conflict, displacement, and violence have left deep psychological wounds and strained relationships between communities of different ethnic and religious backgrounds. In areas such as Al-Shikhan and surrounding camps, many young people—particularly adolescent girls and young women—have experienced trauma, loss, and social fragmentation. These experiences are often accompanied by harmful narratives about “others,” reinforcing divisions and hindering processes of reconciliation and peaceful coexistence.

HEKAYAT responds to these challenges by creating safe and creative spaces for healing, dialogue, and connection. The project works with young women from diverse communities, recognising their potential as active agents of change in rebuilding trust and fostering social cohesion. Through a combination of psychosocial support and artistic expression, participants are supported in processing their experiences, strengthening their well-being, and engaging with others across social divides.

At the heart of the project is the use of textile art practices as a culturally rooted and accessible form of expression. Working individually and collectively, participants create textile pieces that reflect personal stories, emotions, and experiences. These creative processes are accompanied by structured psychological group sessions, where participants learn techniques to better understand and influence their thoughts, feelings, and social interactions. Together, these approaches enable participants to explore new meanings, transform difficult experiences, and build supportive relationships.

Implemented in close partnership with local organisations and actors, HEKAYAT combines participatory research, capacity building, and continuous reflection to ensure that interventions are locally grounded and responsive to community needs. By linking psychosocial support with creative practice and community dialogue, the project contributes to strengthening well-being, resilience, and peaceful coexistence in a fragile and diverse social context.
