The SUNNY project is a Horizon Europe Innovation Action demonstrating sustainable, cost-effective renewable energy solutions for refugee and host communities in Africa. It brings together a multidisciplinary consortium and implements real-life demonstrations in Rwanda and Uganda, targeting both refugee camps and surrounding host communities.
Globally, nearly 95% of displaced people in camps lack reliable access to electricity, and around 81% rely on high-carbon energy sources. In this context, energy access is closely linked to social inclusion, health, livelihoods, and resilience. SUNNY responds by deploying off-grid renewable solutions at household, productive, and community levels, including solar home systems, clean cooking technologies, and energy solutions for agriculture and food storage.
Beyond technology deployment, SUNNY establishes Multi-Actor Learning Labs (MALLs) as co-creation platforms bringing together refugees, host communities, local authorities, NGOs, SMEs, and technology providers. Hudara plays a central role in designing and facilitating the MALL approach, supporting community mapping, inclusive participation, and the integration of gender and social considerations. Through workshops and participatory formats, the MALLs strengthen local ownership, improve technology acceptance, and connect energy solutions to livelihoods and long-term value creation.
