Welcome to Mayotte — an island in the western Indian Ocean shaped by dramatic volcanic landscapes and the world’s largest enclosed lagoon. Beneath this natural beauty, however, lie profound social and environmental challenges: more than 80% of the population lives below the poverty line, climate change is intensifying water shortages, and the island remains heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels.
The MAESHA project responds to these realities by working hand in hand with local communities and a diverse consortium of partners to develop inclusive, climate-friendly energy solutions. At its heart are energy communities: locally rooted initiatives that expand access to renewable energy while strengthening social participation and empowerment. While eleven communities were envisioned, five were realised—and this exhibition highlights four of them, amplifying the voices of those shaping Mayotte’s energy transition from the ground up.
Islands in Transition brings these stories to life—from solar-powered social housing and women-led solar services to clean mobility and student-led climate mobilisation. First presented as a physical exhibition on Gozo, it now continues online, inviting you to explore the people, contexts, and community-driven solutions behind Mayotte’s journey toward a just and inclusive energy future.
